Major changes to the Spousal Maintenance statute are now being considered. Currently spousal maintenance, which is a form of court ordered alimony, is currently available only in marriages of over 10 years durantion and limited to a maximum of $2,500.00 monthly for a maximum of 36 months.
House Bill 901, currently under consideration by the legislature, would extend the amount and duration of maintenance payments for up to 5 years for marriages of 10 to 20 years, 7 years for marriages of 20 to 30 years and up to 10 years for marriages of over 30 years in duration. The maximum amount monthly could be as much as $5,000.00 monthly
My information indicates this bill has a good chance of passages and would become effectie September 1, 2011. If you are a person who might be effected by this law you might consider it’s effects on your personal situation.
